- Story Text: India's former Prime Minister, started her Congress Party's campaign for the forthcoming elections, in India's northern district of Haryana on Saturday (22 September). She addressed about eight rallies in the district and was welcomed by huge crowds.
SYNOPSIS: India's national elections will be held in December or early January and are expected to last several days.
Mrs. Gandhi heads the Congress-One Party a break-away faction of the official Congress party she once headed as Prime Minister.
In her speeches, she blamed the alignment of the official Congress Party, and the Janata Party for causing the mid-term election. She told voters that the Janata Party, in their twenty-eight months of weak leadership, was responsible for inflation and the shortage of diesel fuel in the country.
In another village, the same big welcome. But opposition leader, Jagjivan Ram--Mrs. Gandhi's former ally in the 1977 election which voted her out of office--claimed she was fighting her last battle. And, he said, he hoped she would lose it.
Mr. Ram, also campaigning in the north, expects a three-cornered fight with Caretaker Premier, Charan Singh. Mrs. Gandhi's aunt, Ms. Visaya Pandit, a former High Commissioner to London, said on Sunday (23 September), that she feared Mrs. Gandhi would follow her previous authoritarian policies if elected.
