  • Story Text: Former Argentine President Hector Campora flew into Buenos Aires on Saturday (27 September) after spending more than a year in self-imposed exile in Mexico city.

    The 66-year-old left-wing Peronist told newsmen on his arrival that he was "still active in the political struggle."
    Dr. Campora has been under a death-threat from the right-wing terror squad "Triple A" for 14 months, but the improving political climate in Argentina and the downfall of principal right-winger Joe Lopez Rega clearly led him to risk death and throw his political hat into the ring again.

    There is speculation that he may seek to rally left-wing Peronists disenchanted with Government policies in a bid for power in the next general elections...scheduled for 1977. He already figures as one of the founder members of anew group calling itself the Authentic Peronist Party.

    Dr. Campora slipped away from Mexico City without notifying any of his supporters, but the story was flashed on Buenos Aires radio stations and about 200 people braved the chill to welcome the former leader at Ezeiza Airport.

    He had been on the most loyal supporters of the General Peron and was selected by the Peronists Movement to their Presidential candidate for the elections in March, 1973....at a time when the Argentine military had forbidden General Peron himself to be a candidate.

    Elected President, Dr. Campora embarked on a left-wing programme and within seven weeks found himself being transferred from the Presidential Palace to the Argentine Embassy in Mexico.

    As General Peron lay on his death bed at the end of June last year, he stripped Dr. Campora of even his ambassadorial job. And in May, this year, he was expelled from the Peronist movement.

    Now back in Argentina, Dr. Campora will have to decide whether to join in the current efforts being made by interim Argentine President, Italo Luder....or throw his lot in with the left-wing Peronists who have been excluded from the new Government.
