- Story Text: Israel vowed to continue its "anti-terror" campaign
against the Palestinian Authority and militant groups after
fresh air strikes on Palestinian targets and despite renewed
U.S. backing for Yasser Arafat.
Israeli warplanes and helicopter gunships attacked more
than a dozen Palestinian Authority installations across the
West Bank and Gaza Strip on Thursday (December 14), killing at
least one Palestinian and wounding dozens of others.
Israeli raids have brought tanks to within 100 metres of
Arafats headquarters in the West Bank city of Ramallah and
wrought destruction.
Israel has said its decision does not mean it would
target Arafat personally, but Palestinians have branded the
move a declaration of war.
The new cycle of violence threatened to wreck U.S. envoy
Anthony Zinnis mission to end nearly 15 months of conflict.
Zinni would discuss Israels decision to brand Arafat
irrelevant and would also talk with the Palestinian leader, he
said.
At least 768 Palestinians and 233 Israelis have been
killed since a Palestinian uprising against Israeli occupation
erupted in September 2000 after a deadlock in peace
negotiations.
