- Story Text: Israel's government and opposition leaders were into the final stages of their campaigns on thursday and Friday (27-28 December 1973), before voting takes place on Monday (31 December) in what's expected to be a close general election.
The ruling Labour Party of Prime Minister Golda Meir is being seriously threatened for the first time, and faces the possibility of losing power after 25 years in office.
According to public opinion polls the Opposition Likud -- the party of the right -- has a good chance of beating the government. But poll organisers admit that their samples of the population, especially among the younger generation and with no polls taken among serving soldiers or active reservists, are not complete.
Whatever the outcome, the polls all agree that the government will lose some of the 60 seats it holds in the 120-member Knesset while the Likud opposition will improve on its present 32 seats.
Both parties favour negotiations at Geneva but the Labour Party has charged that the Likud is too inflexible to make the territorial concessions needed to achieve peace. On the other hand, the Likud claims Labour is too weak and too sensitive to outside pressure.
The war has dominated the election campaign; it also caused the election to be postponed from its original date on 30 October.
