  • Story Text: Argentina's President Hector Campora has ordered a mandatory pay rise of 200 pesos (eight pounds sterling) a month for all wage and salary earners.

    Speaking at a press conference after a meeting in the national Congress Building of government, business and labour leaders on Friday (8th June), or Campore said that he had reached agreement with all parties for what he described as a "social accord".

    In addition to the pay rise there would be a national minimum wage of 1000 pesos (Forty pounds sterling) a month, rises in old age pensions and family allowances, and a freeze on the prices of some essential foodstuffs, Dr. Campore said.

    The President, told the press conference that the Argentine agreement was "an act of national commitment" to transform society.

    SYNOPSIS: At Argentina's National Congress Building in Buenos Aires on Friday, President Hector Campora and government ministers met with business and trade union leaders, to discuss economic policy.

    Argentina's Vice-President Solano Lima was among those present at the meeting.

    ....as were the Heads of the Armed Forces.

    and Jose Rucci, Secretary-General of the trade union organisation.

    President Campora told the meeting that the reports of the state of the country he had received, indicated that the situation was worse than he had anticipated.

    Notwithstanding the serious situation the President announced that he was ordering a mandatory pay rise of 200 pesos a month for all wage and salary earners, as well as the institution of a minimum wage of 1000 pesos a month.

    Dr. Campora also announced that there would be rises in old age pensions and family allowances, and a freeze on the prices of some essential foodstuffs.

    The President described the agreement as 'an act of national commitment to transform Argentine society.
