- Story Text: A 420-student college ship from the United States - the "S.S. Universe Campus" - arrived at the Ghanaian port of Tema yesterday (Tuesday), at the start of a three-day study visit to Ghana.
The original ship houses the World Campus Afloat (WCA) of Chapman College, from Orange, California. The students are mainly from the USA, but there are also several from Asian countries who have special scholarships given by the College and by the Seawise Foundation, which owns the 18,000-ton "S.S. Universe Campus."
The floating college runs about 90 courses, conducted by a 64-strong faculty, in 13 classrooms. Among the facilities are a marine biology laboratory, a student union, an 8,000-volume library, a hospital, a 200-seat theatre, a swimming pool, and many other recreational amenities.
The "S.S. Universe Campus" is the third ship used by the WCA in the 16 trips conducted since its inception eight years ago. In that time, about 5,500 students from nearly 500 U.S. and foreign colleges have participated in the academic programme organised by Chapman College - and the liberal arts-centred curriculum is fully accredited by regional and state agencies in the U.S.A.
