- Story Text: The United Nations peace envoy for Syria Lakhdar Brahimi met with Syrian refugees sheltering at a Turkish refugee camp on Tuesday (September 18) in his first visit since taking over the mission from predecessor Kofi Annan.
Brahimi was briefed by the governor of Hatay, Celalettin Lekesiz, before heading to Altinozu camp where some 1000 refugees are registered.
Crowds of Syrians welcomed Brahimi into Altinozu, marching in groups and chanting slogans against the embattled Damascus regime: "Free Syria! We will fight till freedom!"
Turkey is home to 83,000 Syrians lodged at fourteen refugee camps set up in southern provinces near the border. The Altinozu camp was one of the first set up by Turkey soon after the unrest erupted in Syria in March 2011.
Brahimi's one-day visit to Turkey follows a stopover in Cairo on Monday (September 17), which hosted a contact group meeting involving high-level representatives from Egypt, Iran and Turkey, as he seeks ways to end the crisis in Syria.
The envoy met Syrian President Bashar al-Assad for the first time on Saturday, warning after the talks that the worsening conflict in Syria posed a threat to the region and the whole world. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
