- Story Text: Officials in Southern California unveiled a new public-awareness campaign on Thursday (July 31), to educate residents about the ongoing drought and provide reminders to conserve water.
Digital billboards will feature a character dubbed, "Lawn Dude" throughout Southern California, in an effort to combat the state's record drought. Lawn Dude will provide conservation tips on how to reduce water usage.
"This is not normal times. This is an extraordinary drought. This is a crippling drought in California. We are at record breaking heat waves throughout all of Southern California. So in addition to our normal conservation, it's time to step up and do extraordinary conservation. Southern Californians, we're asking you to do your part. We appreciate this partnership with the Southern California Water Committee and Clear Channel to help get that message out, to go above and beyond our normal, daily conservation and do something special," explained Jeffrey Kightlinger, the General Manager of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California.
Advertising company, Clear Channel Outdoor, has donated a number of its digital billboards to promote the new campaign. The company's Southern California spokesperson said that the billboards will provide critical information.
"The advertising campaign being launched today will be up on 25 digital billboards throughout the southern California region. The campaign will run on these boards through the hot summer months and beyond, providing residents with reminders about the importance of conservation during our state's historic drought," explained Layne Lawson, Clear Channel Outdoor spokesperson.
Some of the Lawn Dude slogans will include messages like, "I only drink two days a week" and "Don't hose me, man." - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
