- Story Text: Three people were killed and at least seven wounded on Thursday (June 30) when Rwandan rebel mortars hit an area near Kigali's crowded central market.
Hundreds of people buying food among market stalls ran for cover when the mortars struck. The mortar shells were followed by bursts of anti-aircraft fire above their heads.
Reporters at the scene could also hear explosions from outgoing mortars being fired close-by in government territory.
At the International Committe of the Red Cross (ICRC) hospital where doctors and nurses treated the wounded, staff said at least three had died from the market bombings and that they were many other casualties around the city.
Several children were among the dead and injured. - Copyright Holder: POOL (CAN SELL)
