- Story Text: French troops engaged in the humanitarian mission "Operation Turquoise" on Thursday (June 30) were protecting a growing number of refugees at the Nyarushishi camp in south-western Rwanda.
The camp now houses about 10-12,000 Tutsi refugees, mostly brought in by the Red Cross from nearby churches.
In Goma, Zaire, more than 300 babies and young children are being cared for at a local convent. The children, many of them wounded, were evacuated from Rwanda in a joint operation by the Rwandan and French governments in April.
The children, all under five years old, are being cared for under the auspices of the Red Cross and the Programme Alimentaire Mondiale (PAM).
Aid worker Valerie Mesle said about half the children were Hutu, the rest Tutsi. They would stay at the convent until another place could be found for them.
French troops inside Rwanda have not been able to move freely in some areas, with thousands of Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) supporters demonstrating against the French operation in the eastern rebel-held town of Rwamagana on Monday (June 27).
The mainly-Tutsi RPF distrusts the French for arming and training government forces from the inception of the civil war in October 1990 until late last year.
In recent days the rebels have softened their position and said they might accept the mission if the French do not stray from their humanitarian mandate. - Copyright Holder: POOL (CAN SELL)
