- Story Text: Around 40 people, mostly illegal migrants on their way to the European Union via Serbia, were injured on Tuesday (February 24) when a van slipped off the road in the south of the country.
Serbia's interior ministry said the driver fled the scene of the crash near the Serbian town Leskovac, some 270 kilometres south from Belgrade.
Police say 54 immigrants were cramped in the van that rolled over. In Leskovac hospital doctors took care for 42 patients, of whom six sent to the Clinical Centre in Nis, and four were transported to Belgrade. Two of the victims in Nis hospital have life threatening injuries, authorities say.
According to information released by Serbian police, the injured were emigrants from Bangladesh, Algeria, Laos, Kashmir, Syria, Nigeria and Burma. They entered into Serbia from Macedonia. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
