  • Story Text: INTRO: Ukrainian border guards have foiled an unusual attempt by Chinese nationals to immigrate to the West illegally hidden in a truckload of Christmas trees.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------- Ukranian border guards on Thursday (December 19) prevented 30 Chinese from crossing the border into Slovakia hidden in a truckload of Christmas trees.

    Twenty-nine of them were in Ukraine illegally and had no visas to any Western country.

    The Czech-owned truck was bound for the Czech Republic and was stopped by border guards on the Ukranian-Slovak border.

    The discovery in the cargo of 30 would-be immigrants to the West among the Christmas trees marked the three hundred and second time this year that Ukrainian border guards have caught illegal immigrants trying to travel to the West.

    Most of the immigrants are from China, India, Sri Lanka and Afganistan. They pay several thousand United States dollars to companies or individuals for help in crossing the border.

    Pavlo Shysholin, vice-commander of Ukraine's borderguards, said that Ukraine was becoming the main point for illegal border crossing and that Western authorities were not helping Ukrainian authorities enough to stem the movement of immigrants to the West.
