- Story Text: Many of the protesters are believed to have arrived in France illegally and the authorities have made it clear they are not welcome to stay.
The left wing government, which came to power in June last year, is currently studying applications from more than 140,000 immigrants who claim they are entitled to resident permits.
Wednesday's (March 18) march followed a route from Saint Ambroise church in the 11th district to Saint Bernard Church in northern Paris.
Local priest Jacques Gaillot described the demonstration as a "last chance" for those who had nowhere to go.They didn't want to go back to their native country and they couldn't work in France. For them the situation was terrible.
It was at St Bernard's two years ago that the evacuation of a group of illegal African immigrants sparked a wave of sympathy throughout France.
The past week has seen a number of similar evacuations from churches in Paris and the suburbs.
