- Story Text: Rising Hollywood starlet, Zoey Deutch ('Everybody Wants Some!!', 'Why Him?', 'Dirty Grandpa') is following in the footsteps of her mother, 'Back to the Future' actress Lea Thompson, by starring in a film about time travel.
The film follows a say in the life of Deutch's character, Samantha, which ends with a party after which she and her group of friends are involved in a presumably fatal car crash.
However, instead of dying, Samantha awakes in her bed on the morning of the day she died and finds herself caught in a time loop where she must live the same day making different choices to try to avoid her fate.
"I think it beautifully depicts the female adolescent experience in a way that doesn't belittle it," she said at the premiere. "I just think it's really authentic and honest and I think the irony about making a movie about not having enough time is that we didn't have enough time and people watch this movie, it feels so big and beautiful and grand, it's hard to imagine that it was a very small, low budget film."
The film had its world premiere at the Sundance film festival, where it received positive reviews, and unlike other films at the festival had already secured distribution prior to screening.
Explaining how a teen movie managed to launch at Sundance, the film's director Ry Russo-Young, said "I think it's a lot darker than most teen films and kind of gets to an existential angst and a philosophical bent where it's talking about time and what's it's like to be alive and a self-awareness and reckoning that we all go through at every age, so there are eternal themes in there that are kind of sticky."
In the film, Samantha tries to transform herself, talk to people she wouldn't normally and take risks to try and change her day.
"It's a multi-faceted character and she's a walking contradiction of herself," said Deutch. "She's not a hero or villain or good or bad, she exists somewhere in the middle of all those things and I appreciate she's not this one-dimensional female character, she's complex."
Her mother Lea Thompson and writer actress sister Madelyn also turned out for the premiere. Thompson said on the red carpet "Zoey is a great actress and I'm really proud of her. She does things I would have never really thought to do. She makes choices that are so deep and personal. I coach her sometimes and I'm always so amazed at the work she does and I love this movie. I think it's a great movie for this time."
Zoey has just finished filming 'The Year of Spectacular Men', which was directed by her mother and written by her sister Madelyn.
