- Story Text: Italy's Prime Minister, Mario Monti, visited on Saturday (April 7) his country peacekeepers deployed in southern Lebanon on the first leg of his tour of the Middle East.
Monti flew to Shamaa in southern Lebanon after holding talks with Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati and Lebanese President Michel Suleiman.
In January Italy took over command of the 12,000-strong U.N. peacekeeping force in Lebanon.
Monti met with Major-General Paolo Serra who assumed command of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
Italy has more than 1100 military personnel serving in UNIFIL.
UNIFIL, now about 12,000 strong, is the third biggest U.N. peacekeeping operation and one of the oldest, beginning after an Israeli invasion against Palestinian guerrillas in 1978. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
