- Story Text: Hundreds of protesters took to the streets of central Berlin on Saturday (April 7) as part of the traditional Easter peace marches taking place throughout the country.
Demonstrators called for an end to the violence in Syria and threats towards Iran, as well as the withdrawal of international troops from Afghanistan.
"I think the German army should get out of Afghanistan today, that actually all of these occupiers should get out so that Afghanistan can solve its problems and I'm sure it could, if we left it alone," march participant Juergen Greiner told Reuters TV.
"We should stand up out of responsibility towards our experiences of war and fascism in the second world war. It is because of these experiences that we should have a politics against war and fascism," said Elke Zwinge-Makamizile.
Around 500 people gathered at the central Potsdamer Platz square before marching through the centre to the city's landmark Brandenburg Gate.
Protesters went on to peacefully surround the U.S. embassy, situated next to the Gate, in a ring of banners.
