The second round of peace talks aimed at ending the Kampuchean conflict got underway in Jakarta on Sunday. The talks brought together representatives from the four Kampuchean factions, foreign ministers from Vietnam, Laos and the six non-communist countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
Leaders of the Kampuchean factions met with Indonesian President Suharto on Monday. Thailand's Foreign Minister Siddhi Sawetsila told reporters Suharto said "The Khmer factions have a common destination but they're taking different routes, and they're riding in separate cars. First we want to get the cars going in the same direction and then for them all to get in the same car."
The talks are centred on how to supervise the promised withdrawal of Vietnamese troops, how to phase out foreign military aid to all parties and who should run an interim government before elections can be held.
