  • Story Text: Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak has arrived
    in the Egyptian capital Cairo.Barak who is due to meet U.S.

    President Bill Clinton in Washington on Tuesday, later held
    talks with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.

    The Israeli Prime Minister, who did not speak to
    reporters on his arrival on Monday (April 10) was due to leave
    later for Washington to meet President Bill Clinton on Tuesday
    in a bid to rescue troubled Israeli-Palestinian talks.

    The White House has said Clinton and Barak will also
    discuss prospects for reviving Israeli-Syrian peace talks that
    collapsed in January over the return of the Israeli-held Golan
    Heights.

    Palestinian President Yasser Arafat told Mubarak in Cairo
    on Sunday that the Israeli-Palestinian negotiations taking
    place at Bolling Air Force Base near Washington were making no
    progress.

    In a briefing to Egyptian newspaper editors, Arafat
    bitterly criticised Barak for breaking peace promises and
    described him as "much worse" than his predecessor Benjamin
    Netanyahu.

    Clinton has invited Arafat to meet him in Washington on
    April 20.

    At a news briefing Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa
    said "Let us not talk about any breakthrough or any development
    of that kind until those meetings take place and we know the
    results of the American-Israeli talks at and the
    Palestinian-Israeli talks.
