On March 19, United Nations peacekeeping troops and Israeli-backed militiamen exchanged fire near the south Lebanon town of Barish, near Tyre. No injuries were reported in the incident, which occurred when Irish troops form the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) tried to search a militiaman's vehicles. UNIFIL spokesman, Timor Goksel, said the militiamen refused to allow the search and withdrew to the village, form where gunmen opened fire on the UN position with light arms and grenades. The Irish troops shot back and the exchange if fire continued until Israeli liaison officers, notified by UNIFIL, were able to reach the village. UNIFIL troops and Israeli-backed militiaman in the area have clashed frequently in recent weeks.
