Guerrillas of the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Organisation are believed to have been behind an attack at Chalatenango, El Salvador, in which two people died, according to a military spokesman. He said one guerrilla and one soldier died in the two-hour attack on Thursday.
Attacks also took place in El Salvador's capital, San Salvador, where a national policeman was shot dead.
The FMLN is a left-wing guerrilla front opposing the right-wing government. Following the Central American peace accords, their aid from Nicaragua has been stopped but a spokesman said that this will not halt them in their fight. On Tuesday they attacked army positions in 10 of El Salvador's 14 provinces to protest against what they call the repression of grass-roots movements sympathetic to them.
Government officials say the offensive endangers a second round of talks between rebel and government representatives scheduled for October. The two sides met in September in Mexico City to cry to negotiate an end to the 10-year-old war in which 70,000 people have been killed, most of them civilians.
