- Story Text: Israel and Egypt signed in Geneva on Thursday (4 September) an interim agreement aimed at opening up prospects of peace after 28 years of conflict.
Under the Accord, Israel undertakes to pull back its forces to new lines in the Sinai Desert, giving up two strategic mountain passes and the Abu Rudies oil fields.
In return Egypt agrees to forsake the use of force, and take other steps towards normalising the situation in the region. Both countries are seeking increased aid from the United States as part of the bargain.
The Israeli Ambassador to France, Mr. Mordechai Gazit signed for Israel and Major-General Taha El Magdoub for Egypt, in the presence of Lieutenant General Ensio Siilasvuo, the Finnish Chief Co-Ordinator of the United Nations Peace-keeping operations in the Middle East.
The United States and the Soviet Union, the co-chairmen of the 1973 Middle East Peace Conference, were not represented at the ceremony.
The Israeli and Egyptian delegation heads signed three documents - an agreement between Egypt and Israel; an annex to the agreement; and a map attached to the annex.
