- Story Text: In Sierra Leone's capital Freetown, peacepeeking
troops have been searching people and cars as they assert
their presence. And British High Commissioner Peter Penfold
has visitied the shattered city and pledged to help bring
peace to the civil war-ravaged country.
A mainly Nigerian ECOMOG regional force has been
defending the government of Ahmad Tejan Kabba against rebels
who invaded the capital Freetown on Janaury 6.Heavy fighting
has damaged large parts of the city.
Talks aimed at securing a ceasefire led by Togo and Ivory
Coast stalled last week after Nigeria complained that the
three countries which contributed troops to the peacekeeping
force known as ECOMOG were being sidelined.
Nigeria made clear that only it and fellow troop
contributors Ghana and Guinea were entitled to dictate the
pace of negotiations for a settlement.
Security fears and complex logistical problems are holding
up shipments of emergency food and medicines into Sierra
Leone's war-battered capital Freetown, aid workers said on
Wednesday.
Kabba said ECOMOG forces has been a great help, and
pledged to find way to what he called "sustainable peace" in
the country.
British High Commissioner Peter Penfold was out and about
on Wednesday in Freetown. He said he wanted Britain to help
bring peace and be at the forefront of humanitarian
assistance.
