- Story Text: Bodies and burned-out military hardware were scattered across the town of Tubmanburg in Liberia on Wednesday (January 10), after a week of fighting between rebels and soldiers of the peacekeeping force ECOMOG left more than 60 peacekeepers dead.
Rebels from guerrilla leader General Roosevelt Johnson's Krahn tribe removed roadblocks outside Tubmanburg to welcome a convoy bringing a mission of United Nations (U.N.) observers, relief assessment personnel, ECOMOG peacekeeping force commanders and a joint ceasefire monitoring team from Liberia's factions.
Vaunted by their dominance of the stretch of highway from Tubmanburg to about halfway to the capital, the rebels danced and chanted traditional Krahn warrior songs.
The fighting threatened an accord to end years of civil war in Liberia and ECOMOG's plans to start disarming 60,000 guerrillas next week.
More than 13,000 people have fled Tubmanburg, once a thriving town in Liberia's western region rich in timber, diamonds and iron ore, but devastated by six years of civil war.
