- Story Text: With military responsibility for Haiti's security officially transferred to the United Nations (U.N.), United States (U.S.) commanders left Haiti, leaving U.N. soldiers with the task of bringing peace and security to the country.
The head of the U.S. forces in Haiti, General George Fisher, who handed over command to the U.N. multinational forces in a cermony on Friday, left along with some of his men.
The U.S. ambassador to Haiti, William Swing, said he felt the changeover from a United States to a U.N. operation had gone "unusually well" and could be a model for peace keeping operations.
The U.N. Security Council has authorised up to 6,000 troops and military personnel and 900 civilian police. The military commander of the United Nations Mission in Haiti (UNMIH) is U.S. Major General Joseph Kinzer and the civilian head, Lakhdar Brahimi, a former Algerian foreign minister.
