- Story Text: Presidents Alberto Fujimori of Peru and Jamil Mahuad of Ecuador have met in New York for talks aimed at ending a long-running border dispute between their two countries.
The meeting between Fujimori and Mahuad at a New York hotel on Saturday (October 3) was their fourth face-to-face since Mahuad was inaugurated in August.
Peru and Ecuador have disputed their jungle border for more than 50 years and the issue erupted into war in 1995.
Tension flared again in August before Mahuad and Fujimori began meeting to get peace talks back on track.
Last weekend Fujimori and Mahuad said at a meeting in Brasilia they had agreed to a plan that could restart trade and navigation along the disputed border.But both leaders said they could not reach a final accord until they sealed a deal over the disputed fixing of boundary points on the border.
At a press conference, Fujimori said they had agreed the text for an agreement.Mahuad said it was difficult for each president to sign a treaty "saying this land which was claimed by our country for so many years...now we decide to give to the other country." But he added: "we're trying to find out a solution.
