- Story Text: European Union (EU) peace envoy Carl Bildt said on Sunday (July 2) that Serbia will need to go further than recognising Bosnia if international sanctions on Belgrade are to be lifted.
"We are pursuing negotiations with (Serbian President Slobodan) Milosevic on...mutual recognition and sanctions," Bildt told reporters in Zagreb, Croatia.
"But we need to go further than that and achieve changes on the ground. That I've said very clearly and I hope he (Milosevic) understands." Bildt was speaking after meeting Croatian President Franjo Tudjman during his second tour of the region.
Bildt referred to the Bosnian Serb siege of the Bosnian capital of Sarajevo, and said the situation was quickly deteriorating.
"There is a sense of urgency; the situation is going from bad to worse," he said.
Bildt, a former Swedish prime minister, was joined at the press conference by his fellow-mediator Thorvald Stoltenberg. The two met Milosevic in Belgrade on Saturday (July 1) to try to revive long-stalled Bosnia peace negotiations.
The mediators were scheduled to fly to the rebel Croatian "capital" Knin on Monday (July 3), and then to the mainly Moslem enclave of Tuzla in eastern Bosnia before returning to Geneva.
