- Story Text: Several hundred Suddhist monks in the khmer capital, Phnom Penh, have been fasting and praying for peace since last Monday (4 February) in a pagoda in the centre of the city.
At least once an hour their leader calls all the monks to prayer. He has been fasting and praying alone in front of a small altar in a corner of the ???goda. Except for essential bodily functions, he has not moved for three days. However, he does have a telephone beside the altar.
As the prayers come to and end, the monks take bamboo water guns, fill them with water, point them skyward, and spray. They say this symbolizes their desire for peace by spraying water on the flames of war.
The monks are calling on both sides in the war in the khmer Republic to stop the carnage. They are in direct contact with the government in Rhnom Pech and are demanding that it make the first move toward peace. The monks say that if the Lon Nol regime refuses to respond they will continue to fast and pray.
