- Story Text: United States (U.S.) Marines on Wednesday (July 26) joined forces with their Ukrainian counterparts for joint peacekeeping exercises on the former Soviet republic's sunny Black Sea Coast.
Some 150 U.S. soldiers, special forces marines of the 24th Expeditionary Force, are spending the week at a Ukrainian Marine base near the southern port town of Nikolayev.
After a parade on Wednesday morning, the soldiers left for various field exercises designed to simulate peacekeeping operations in a U.N.-style safe area.
The exercises, organised under NATO's Partnership for Peace programme, are the first in which marines of the two countries have cooperated. U.S. Army troops held exercises with Ukrainian forces in Western Ukraine in May.
