- Story Text: Algeria's main opposition groups, due to present a joint peace proposal on Friday (January 13th), have said they welcomed French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe's cautious approval of their peace talks Abdenour Ali Yahya, spokesman for the groups gathered in Rome and president of Algeria's Human Rights League, on Thursday (January 12) said part of the proposal will be the creation of a government of transition in Algeria. This would be formed by the opposition and the current government, they would take Algeria to new elections he said.
The opposition groups have been meeting since Sunday in Rome at the Sant' Egidio Community, a Roman Catholic peace group. The Algerian government, which boycotted similar talks last November, has branded the latest initiative an interference in its affairs.
Meanwhile thousands demonstrated against the Rome talks in Aim Turk, Algeria.
