- Story Text: In his annual Christmas address from St. Peter's Square, Pope Paul emphasised, on Sunday (23 December), that Christmas was a festival of peace, and he expressed his hope for peace throughout the world.
Pope Paul included a special greeting for the old, the poor and the infirm during his speech which was heard by thousands of Catholic pilgrims gathered beneath his balcony.
The 76-year-old Pontiff declared "Christmas is a festival of peace" and he added, "we hope for peace in the world, peace between nations and social peace."
Earlier in the week, Pope Paul had offered the Vatican's help as a mediator in the Middle East Peace Conference, which is now meeting in Geneva. The day before he had talks with four African Heads-of-State, the Pope had called for a "just and generous response" towards the solution of the problem towards Palestinian refugees.
