- Story Text: Israeli soldiers clash with Palestinians and peace
activists at anti-barrier protest.
Clashes erupted on Friday (July 1, 2005) as Palestinian
worshippers who tried to reach a barrier construction site
in the West Bank village of Beilin to protest against its
erection, were blocked by Israeli forces who fired tear gas
to disperses the demonstration.
Two Israeli peace activists were arrested.
The village of Beilin has been a flashpoint for clashes
and demonstrations against the construction of the
controversial barrier, which Israel calls its bulwark
against suicide bombers but Palestinians see as a bid to
annex occupied land they seek for a future land.
Palestinians in revolt since 2000 contend that the
barrier, and continued Israeli settlement expansion in
occupied West Bank areas, could relegate them to enclaves
and leave no room for the viable state they seek.
Israel denies any such intention and says the barrier
could be torn down and negotiations on Palestinian
statehood could proceed if Palestinians ended attacks on
Israelis.
Israel has already erected large portions of its
barrier inside the West Bank, including east Jerusalem,
isolating Jerusalem from the rest of the West Bank.
The International Court of Justice said the barrier,
being built on land Israel occupied in the 1967 Middle East
war, is illegal and contrary to international law.
