- Story Text: A group of peace activists protesting at the
U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, have been detained in the
Turkish capital, Ankara.
A group of peace activists on Friday morning
(August 29, 2003) gathered outside the United States embassy in
Ankara, to register their opposition to any Turkish
contribution to the Iraq security force.
The protest coincided with the visit by top U.S.
commander to Europe and NATO chief James Jones to Turkey on
Friday for talks on a possible Turkish contribution to the
Iraq security force.
The protesters were soon blocked by a larger group of
policemen.
The activists wanted to give a letter to the newly
inaugurated U.S. ambassador to Turkey Mark Edelman. Several
were arrested by police and removed from the scene.
A larger opposition rally is expected to take place on
Saturday with the attendance of groups ranging from
leftists to nationalists.
