Guatemalan President Oscar Berger and Nobel Peace Prize
winner Rigoberta Menchu.
French President Jacques Chirac met with Guatemalan
President Oscar Berger and Nobel Peace Prize winner
Rigoberta Menchu on Wednesday (May 27).
Chirac arrived in Guatemala on Tuesday (May 26) for the
official state visit and stated his great appreciation for
the culture.
"In this land of Quetzal (Guatemala's national bird),
of the Men of Corn (name that Mayans call themselves, also
book by Miguel Angel Asturias) and of Popol Vuh (Mayan holy
book), this compendium of cosmogony and thought of the
Maya-Quiches of Guatemala, of the homeland of (national
hero and writer) Rafael Landivar and of (poet, indigenous
activist and Nobel prize winner in literature) Miguel Angel
Asturias in this new democratic Guatemala, which is
building in the foundations that constitute the peace
accord and is headed toward regional integration, in this
country," Chirac said, "I once again bring the greetings
and support of France."
He stopped in Guatemala on his way to Mexico to attend
a European Union-Latin America Summit to be held in
Guadalajara on Friday (May 28).
Nobel Peace Prize winner Rigoberta Menchu said she
appreciated the state visit and had high hopes for the
summit.
"To me, in the first place, he is a great friend from
many years ago," she said. "That he come to Guatemala
before the Guadalajara summit I think is very good and very
important. I hope the Guadalajara summit can defend the
agenda of the indigenous people, the agenda of the
communities and, above all, the development of the
countryside."
France has a long history of supporting the democratic
governments of Guatemala and is one of the country's
greatest providers of aid.
