- Story Text: Argentina's President Cristina Fernandez blasted the United Kingdom on Tuesday (December 20) during the Mercosur summit in Montevideo, Uruguay, saying the subject of the Falkland Islands was not an Argentine issue but rather a global one.
Fernandez told heads of state from the region that the UK was not fulfilling a UN resolution that calls for the two countries to sit down and discuss the long-disputed islands that Argentina claims as their own and calls Malvinas.
"Malvinas is not an Argentine issue, it is a global issue because they are taking our energy and fishing resources out of the Malvinas and when they require more resources - and those of you who have resources think about this - they who have (armed) forces will go and seek out those resources wherever and however they see fit," Fernandez said.
She went on to say that the UK has failed to comply with UN resolutions.
"The United Kingdom is a permanent member of the UN Security Council yet they do not respect a single, not a single resolution. We are not asking them to come here and recognize that the Malvinas are Argentine but what we are saying is for them to comply with the United Nations, sit down and dialogue, dialogue, dialogue," Fernandez said.
She added: "Nor should they come at us with the excuse of the dictatorship or the war from 30 years ago because they were the ones who would speak with the dictators."
Fernandez's comments came during the Mercosur summit where the permanent members, Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay met to discuss ways to protect themselves from a renewed global economic crisis.
Earlier in the day, Fernandez had to abandon one of the working session after reports emerged that a member of her economic team had been found dead in his hotel room.
