- Story Text: Uruguay's World Cup soccer fans were crushed Saturday (June 28) after their team's 2-0 loss against Colombia, denying Uruguay the chance to compete in the quarter-finals of the World Cup for the first time.
Fans gathered throughout the country to watch the match together but nowhere was the crowd more hard core than those that stood in the cold and watched the match in front of Luis Suarez's home.
Most of the fans agreed that without their star striker the team had no way back after Colombia's James Rodriguez scored two goals.
"What happened had to happen when the leader falls because of the lack of energy and that is what we saw today," said Rosario Melgar.
"Maybe we should recognize that Suarez may have made a mistake but that does not warrant the butchery they did to him."
"They are (FIFA) mafiosos. All of them are mafiosos. What they did was get Uruguay out of the middle," she added.
"It is cold but I am here for Suarez because he is needed and you can see it on the pitch," said Ruben Martinez who sat on his motorcycle and watched in dismay.
Once the match had ended, Suarez finally opened a window and waved to the fans who had braved a cold, win-less night to be near him. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
