With a number of animals infected with tuberculosis, the zoo in Montevideo has been forced to close its doors to the public. Several animals have died and many others have been tested and found infected. Unfortunately, the inoculation campaign now under way is likely to have been undertaken too late to save the sick animals. Zoo workers raised the issue in the Uruguayan Parliament, claiming their own lives were at risk. Despite calls for the slaughter of all infected animals, zoo authorities have so far proved reluctant to follow such a course of action, which could adversely affect the zoo's economic prospects.
