Uruguay achieved their first victory over East Germany when they record a 3-0 win in friendly match in Montevideo on January 29. The home side took the lead in the 37th minute when the East German defence allowed Carlos Aguilera through to score. The East Germans proved disappointing and most of the attacking play came from Uruguay. However, the South American side had to wait until well into the second half before increasing their lead. Da Silva scored in the 78th minute and six minutes later Francescoli rounded things off with a third goal. The match was intended as a warm up for World Cup qualifiers scheduled for both teams and was watched by a crowd of 63,000 who were highly delighted with the performance of the home team.
