    Independiente of Argentina won a place in the final of the Libertadores Cup, the South American club championships' tournament, they beat Nacional of Uruguay one-nil in the Argentine city of Avellaneda on July 4. Six times winners of the competition, Independiente dominated the game, creating many clearcut chances. Nacional were overrun by the Argentines after putting up resistance for the first ten minutes. Buffarini, number 23, came close in the first half for Independiente, but his shot was deflected by a Nacional defender. After a free kick was awarded to Independiente, players pushed and shoved each other as tempers threatened to boil over. From the kick, Nacional keeper Sosa brought off an athletic save, pushing the ball over the bar. In the second half, Independiente continued to put pressure on the Uruguayans and in the 59th minute, Buffarini penetrated the Nacional defence. The ball bobbed up tantalizingly in the penalty area, and number 9, Burruchaga, slotted his shot past the keeper to make it Independiente one, Nacional nil. The Argentine champions threatened to widen the deficit when Buffarini drove in a shot form 25 yards, with Sosa again forced to make a spectacular save to keep Nacional in with a chance. Tempers boiled over in the crowd too, and police moved in. Nacional staged a late comeback, winning a corner. Luzardo's shot beat the Independiente 'keeper, but the goal was disallowed. So Independiente went through to the final, and whoever their opponents are, the Argentines must be favourites to carry off the Libertadores Cup for a record seven times.
