  • Story Text: Uruguay's Foreign Minister Luis Almagro visited the Organization of American States (OAS) headquarters in Washington on Thursday (February 19), in a push to become the bloc's next secretary-general.
    He is currently the only contender for the post, which is now held by Chile's Jose Miguel Insulza.
    Almagro presented his ideas to civil society representatives, saying the job of secretary-general required the input of many different groups.
    "A secretary-general's work plan is not like a work plan for a person or one country. It's the cumulation of the work of many people, many countries," he said. "It is a joint collaboration because it must be developed together and in that sense civil society has a role to play."
    On Wednesday, Insulza and his possible successor met to discuss the most pressing issues facing the region as well as the future of the organization.
    The OAS is expected to elect a new secretary-general in March.
