- Story Text: Uruguayans go to the polls tomorrow (Sunday) to elect a new president in the most crucial elections in the nation's history. They will decide whether the country maintains its conservative tradition or swings sharply to the left.
For the first time a left-wing coalition including the Communist Party is challenging the two traditional big parties, the Colorados, headed by outgoing President Jorge Pachecho Areco, and the Blancos.
The coalition, called the Broad Front (Frente Amplio), is modelled on the lines of the Chilean Popular Front which brought President Salvador Allende to power a year ago.
Few observers predict an outright victory for the Broad Front candidate, retired army General Liber Seregni, in the eleven-man contest. But may do suggest that a strong result for the Front could create a new division of political allegiances for the future.
