- Story Text: Security forces in Montevideo have captured the leader of Uruguay's guerrilla band, the Tupamaros, after a gunbattle.
The leader, Raul Sendic, aged 47, was shot in the face as he tried to escape from a building in which he had been Hiding. He was rushed to hospital and reported to be in a serious condition.
Sendic, a former law student, founded the Tupamaros which, in the past six years, have been held responsible for a wave of political assassinations, kidnapping and robberies.
One of their victims was the British Ambassador to Uruguay, Mr. Geoffrey Jackson, who was held for eight months before being released in September last year.
Sendic was caught when police raided the house in which he had been hiding. He was hit in the jaw when police returned his gunfire.
