- Story Text: Uruguay's President Jorge Batlle (BAH-SHAY) has
announced that Uruguay's Economy Minister, Alberto Bension
(Ben-SEEON), has resigned due to lack of political support.
Uruguayan Economy Minister Alberto Bension has
resigned after losing the support of part of the ruling
coalition, Uruguay's President Jorge Batlle said late on
Monday (July 22).
Bension's resignation is the latest symptom of growing
troubles in the small, recession-hit South American nation.
His replacement will be announced on Tuesday (July 23), Batlle
told reporters.
"This is a government of coalition and we have to accept
this, even though we don't like it. Even though it is
deplorable that Minister Bension cannot continue in his
position, we have to accept it," Batlle said.
Bension's resignation comes as the country faces one of its
worst-ever economic crises. The agriculture, tourism and
banking-dependent economy has been rocked in recent months by
spillover from the economic chaos in neighboring Argentina,
where a recession has pushed banks to the brink of collapse.
"He who leaves as well as he who comes, like all in the
government, are all convinced that we have only one objective
before us - preserve and consolidate the financial system,
defend Uruguay's bank, and assure the country in weathering
this storm that has come from the outside and we are going to
confront," said Batlle.
The National Party, an ally of the ruling Colorado Party,
asked on Monday that Bension be replaced in order to boost
confidence in the economy, which has been weakened by the
recession and by a steep decline in bank deposits.
