  • Story Text: Campaigning for Uruguay's presidential elections got into top gear this week, with all the major candidates holding rallies. The elections are due to be held on 28 November. The economy is seen as the major issue. The country is suffering from sagging prices for its main export products, while soaring inflation has compounded the difficulties.

    President Pacheco Areco, of the ruling Colorado Party is seeking re-election. although there is a large slat of candidates opposing him, two men stand out. The first is former army commander, General Liber Seregni, candidate of the so-called Broad Front. The other major opposition comes from Senator Wilson Ferreira Aldunate, a candidate for a traditional political group, the Blanco Party.

    On Monday (25 October), in Montevideo, Senator Aldunate held a large rally to gather support.

    SYNOPSIS: Campaigning for uruguay's presidential elections got into top gear in Montevideo this week. President Pacheco Areco is seeking re-election in the November voting with the traditional Colorado Party.

    Perhaps his stiffest competition will come from the other traditional party, the Blancos, and their leading candidate Senator Wilson Ferreira Aldunate, a liberal. Mr. Aldunate, 51, us a farmer and former Minister of Agriculture. He has a good reputation as a politician and is popular in the rural areas of the country.

    As one of the more liberal members of the largely conservative Blanco Party, he is regarded as having the best chance among blanco candidates of becoming president. Beginning on Monday, he stepped up his campaign with numerous public meetings in Montevideo and the surrounding countryside.
