- Story Text: The body of Uruguay's military attache in Paris, assassinated by two gunmen at his home in the French capital last week, was flown back to a full military funeral in Montevideo on Friday (27 December).
Colonel Ramon Trabal, aged 45 and a former chief of the Uruguayan intelligence service, had been shot six times by two men in the underground garage at the Paris apartment block where he lived. A group calling itself the Raul Sendic International Brigade -- named after the founder of the Uruguayan Tupamaros guerrilla movement -- claimed responsibility for the murder.
Uruguayan President Juan Maria Bordaberry led the mourners as the body of Colonel Trabal arrived at Montevideo. The head of state had earlier said in a nationwide television broadcast that he called on France to hunt the killers "in a most energetic manner."
A communique from the Raul Sendic group said that assassins were French anti-imperialists.
