  • Story Text: Uruguayan President Juan Maria Bordaberry and President Juan Peron had been marked out for assassination during President Bordaberry's visit to Argentina on Tuesday (12 February), according to police sources in Buenos Aires. President Bordaberry was on a one-day visit to ratify a treaty signed with President Peron two months ago to settle a long-standing limitation dispute in the River Plate estuary.

    According to police, Carlos Alberto Caride, a member of a left-wing Peronist youth group, was caught with a hand grenade and a pistol on the presidential route shortly before the motorcade was due to pass. Police say that he was to have been aided in the assassination attempt by six Uruguayan nationals who were put under preventive detention shortly before President Bordaberry's arrival. President person and the civil authorities have not yet made a statement on the arrest.

    When President Bordaberry arrived on Tuesday he did not inspect a guard of honour, as had been planned, but went straight to an airport building whore he was warmly greeted by President Person. After a short meeting the Presidents and their wives left by car. Later issued a joint statement welcoming the continued economic integration of their two countries.
