  • Story Text: The World Cup hosts, Argentina beat neighbours Uruguay three-nil on Wednesday (3 May) in another of their warm-up games leading to the finals next month. The two sides had met nine days earlier, and that time Uruguay won two nil, though Argentina had been fielding an experimental side, using some players for a final try-out.

    SYNOPSIS: This time, Argentina, playing left to right, were back to what looks to be their strongest side, and were soon dictating the midfield.

    It wasn't long before Argentina went ahead. The twenty first minute, and centre forward Luque evades the Uruguay defence and goalkeeper Rodriguez. One-nil.

    The second half. And this time it was the turn of Argentina's midfield player Ardiles. A free-kick....and Ardiles drives home the rebound five minutes after the restart.

    Argentina on the attack again. A different side from the one that had lost earlier in the week to Uruguay. And it gave manager Cesar Luis Menotti the chance to introduce a newcomer to the Argentina midfield, Norberto Alonso, who has been in tremendous form for his River Plate club....It was his presence of field that sharpened up Argentina's attack after he came on, and led to this kind of counter ... though this time Rodriguez held out in Uruguay's goal.

    Uruguay had little opportunity in attack, though when the ball went into the net after this move it seemed they had pulled one back....but the referee ruled offside.

    The final minute, and Argentina put together a last attacking surge that's rounded off by this goal from Alonso. The final score, three-nil.
