- Story Text: Many military officials, including U.S., Germany, United Kingdom and Turkey attended the Global Terrorism and International Cooperation Symposium in the Turkish capital Ankara on Thursday (March 23).
Turkish chief of general staff, Hilmi Ozkok said at the opening of the symposium that a common understanding of terror must be established.
"Making a difference between the freedom fighter and the murderer in the perspective of a terrorist, is an understanding which feeds terror. There can not be a common solution unless a common understanding of terror has ben established. We need cooperation for a common solution. The uncertainty which will occur due to not establishment of a cooperation will lead to an environment for terror to grow and spread," said Ozkok.
Afghan President Hamid Karzai who addressed the conference said Islam should not be identified with terror.
"Islam is a religion of peace. In Islam killing an innocent man, killing an innocent person is equated with the killing of the whole humanity. Therefore the first thing that we should do, as people in this world, is to commit ourselves to recognising that no religion is for extremism and terrorism, that no religion wants to hurt and especially Islam as I am a moslem and I would like to speak for it, will not allow religion to be used for that purpose," said Karzai.
U.S. Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff, Peter Pace is expected to address the symposium on Friday (March 24). - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
