- Story Text: Hundreds of people took to the streets of Pakistan's
port city Karachi on Tuesday to denounce the country's
military government for its "unstinted support" for the US as
it mounts a military response to the attacks on New York and
Washington.
The demonstrators, in what are becoming almost daily shows
of support, voiced their backing for Osama bin Laden and
Afghanistan's Taliban government.
The "Defense Council of Pakistan and Afghanistan" held
another demonstration against Pakistan's military rulers and
the US government in Karachi Tuesday (October 2).
The rally was organized by Mohib-e-Watan (Patriotic)
Party in Keamari, the port area of Karachi.
Leaders from religious parties, including Jamiatul Ulmai
Islam, Jamaat Islami, Sipah-e-Sahaba, Swad-e-Azam Ahle Sunnat,
Jamiat Ulma Council, Jamiat Ittehad Ulma, Markazi Jamiat Ahle
Hadis and other Jihadi Parties, also addressed the protest
rally.
The main speaker at the rally was Maulana Asad Thanvi,
President of Jamiat Ulmai Islam (JUI).
Protesters carried placards, banners and flags and
chanted slogans against possible American reprisals against
Afghanistan - which Washington says is harbouring the prime
suspect in the September 11th attack - Osama bin laden.
The speakers and protesters at the rally also condemned
what they called Israeli atrocities in Palestine and American
support of Israel.
