- Story Text: Iraqis demonstrate against terrorist attacks and in
favour of democracy.
Hundreds of Iraqis took to the streets of Baghdad on
Friday (December 5) to protest against what they described
as terrorist attacks and voice support for the U.S. drive
to build a democratic system in Iraq.
The demonstrators, including men and children, marched
along Sadoun street in central Baghdad and carried banners
denouncing terrorism and terrorist attacks.
One angry demonstrator shouted: "No mercy to those who
have no mercy towards people. Damn you, we will go ahead
with our democratic process despite these acts."
Another demonstrator, Al-Yassiri Abdul Aziz, general
coordinator for Iraqi Democratic Trend, said the terrorists
aim to hinder Iraq's process towards democracy. He praised
the U.S.-led administration's efforts to build a democratic
and free Iraq.
"We organise (the demonstration) now because the
terrorists now kill a lot of people, kill the children,
kill women, kill the people, kill the police. They want to
stop our plan to go to a democratic system. We are against
them (the attackers)."
A large number of Iraqi civilians and policemen have
been killed in attacks which have plagued Baghdad and other
parts of Iraq following the fall of the regime of Saddam
Hussein.
Over 200 U.S. and multi-national soldiers and security
forces were killed in several attacks by anti-coalition
guerrillas since the end of major combat in Iraq on May 1.
