- Story Text: South Korean police held an anti-terrorism exercise at
Daejeon's World Cup Stadium ahead of the World Cup soccer
finals co-hosted with Japan this year.
South Korea's Chungcheong-Namdo Police and SWAT
(Special Weapons And Tactics) team held an anti-terrorism
drill on Thursday (January 31) at Daejeon World Cup Stadium,
about two-hour drive from Seoul.
The police mobilised more than 70 for the training, where
SWAT team members began the session with a hostage situation.
The head of the SWAT team said the police would hold more
drills to safely host the World Cup soccer finals at Daejeon's
Stadium.
"Chungcheong-Namdo's police and SWAT team will hold
simulated training against terrorism close to the real
situations on demands for safe hosting of the 2002 World Cup
finals in Daejeon to get ready for possible hooligan or
terrorist situations," said the chief of Chungcheong-Namdo
Province SWAT team, who wished to remain anonymous for
security reason.
The police have also held anti-chemical and biological
weapons training, following the anthrax scare in the United
States last year.
They plan to hold anti-terrorism exercises at least once a
month until the World Cup finals kick-off on May 31.
The U.S. , Poland, Spain and South Africa are scheduled to
compete at Daejeon Stadium.
